St Nicolas' Church, Hockley

St Nicolas’ Church stands in Lower Tower Street, Hockley, a former Church of England parish church designed by the Birmingham firm Martin & Chamberlain. Built in the 19th century, it was consecrated on 24 October 1860 by the Bishop of Worcester. The parish was formed nine years later from land taken from St Stephen the Martyr’s Church in Newtown Row. Repairs in 1890 included redecoration by J.R. Lee and Co under the direction of Cotton and Bidlake. In 1942 the parishes of St Nicolas and St Edward on New John Street West were united after St Edward closed. The church itself closed in 1947 when its parish merged back into St George in the Fields, Hockley. The building is recognised for its organ, installed by Stringer and renovated during the 1890 redecoration scheme. The organ’s specification appears on the National Pipe Organ Register. The church’s history reflects the shifting boundaries of Birmingham parishes across the 19th and early 20th centuries. Martin & Chamberlain’s design belongs to the period when Birmingham expanded rapidly and new churches were needed. The 1890 redecoration shows how congregations maintained their buildings even as cities grew around them. Visitors find a quiet former church in Lower Tower Street, its interior altered after closure but still showing the work of Cotton and Bidlake. The organ, though no longer played regularly, remains a feature recorded for posterity.
