Pfarrkirche Maria Geburt, Enzersfeld im Weinviertel

The parish church of Enzersfeld stands in the south-west of the village on the main road, beside the village square. It is a large Roman Catholic hall church with side aisles and a corner tower, built between 1908 and 1909 over the foundations of an earlier church. The architect Josef Schmalzhofer designed the exterior, while Richard Jordan planned the interior decoration. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and belongs to the Diocese of Vienna. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved early-20th-century art and furnishings. The high altar shows the Nativity in a Secession-style frame by Maria Schöffmann. Side altars honour the Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph, and the pulpit depicts the Good Shepherd. A baroque side altar from the 18th century, originally the main altar, survives in the nave. The 1909 organ by Johann M. Kauffmann has 612 pipes and a freestanding console. Inside, the wide barrel-vaulted nave opens into double transepts with large round-headed windows. The restored 1909 colour scheme reveals delicate bands of colour, flowers and stars on the ceiling. Behind plain whitewash from 1959, the original painted decoration was recovered in 2016. Three bells cast in 1949 hang in the tower, each inscribed with wartime remembrance texts.
