Mühlstein

The Mühlstein is a 1,059-metre mountain on the western edge of the Osterhorngruppe in Salzburg. It lies about eight kilometres south-east of the city, straddling the border between two districts. The summit belongs to Elsbethen, while the steep eastern face called the Mühlsteinwand belongs to Puch. A small settlement called Mühlstein sits at the foot of this wall. Locals say the mountain’s name comes from the shape of the cliff, which resembles a millstone. Three working alpine pastures are scattered across its slopes. The Schwarzenbergalm, Erentrudisalm and Fageralm sit at 930, 911 and 893 metres respectively. The Fageralm and Erentrudisalm both run guesthouses popular with walkers, mountain bikers and drivers. A stream called the Lettenbach rises near the Fageralm and flows north for about two kilometres before joining the Klausbach. West of the Lettenbach, the shorter Gfallsbach runs parallel and also feeds into the Klausbach. Across the Klausbach valley to the east stands the higher Schwarzenberg, while the Hengstberg, a lower outlier, rises to the north-west.
