Killevy Castle

Killeavy Castle stands in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, as a Grade A listed 19th-century castle built between 1810 and 1820. It was originally constructed for the Foxall family and later designed to resemble nearby Gosford Castle. The Foxalls commissioned architect George Papworth in 1836 to add four towers, outbuildings and Tudor-style windows. By 1881 the castle passed to the Bell family, who owned it until 2000. Restoration plans were announced in 2013 with a £1 million grant from Invest Northern Ireland. The castle’s history begins as a country farmhouse before its grand transformation. The Foxall family owned it during its early years and later expanded the structure under Papworth’s direction. The Bell family took over in the 19th century and held it until the 21st century. After Maureen Bell’s death in 2000, the castle was sold at auction for £1.19 million. Invest Northern Ireland later provided £1 million for its restoration. Visitors find a restored castle with four towers and Tudor-style windows added in the 19th century. The surrounding County Armagh landscape offers views typical of the region’s gentle hills. The castle’s architectural details reflect its transformation from a farmhouse to a grand residence. Restoration efforts have preserved its historic features while adapting it for modern use.
