Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald Parish Church

The Catholic parish church of St John of Nepomuk stands in Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald, a village in the upper Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. Built between 1784 and 1786, it is a simple Josephinian single-nave church with a three-bay nave and a slightly recessed polygonal choir ending in five eighths. The church is protected as a listed building and belongs to the Schlägl Abbey. The church’s late-baroque high altar dates from about 1785 and carries an image of St John of Nepomuk. The neo-baroque pulpit was made by Johann Mayr in 1884, while the baptismal font and most of the statues of saints were carved by Jordan Koller. A tower crowned by a pointed spire was added to the north side in 1859–61. Inside, visitors find the spare lines of Josephinian church architecture alongside rich late-baroque furnishings. The high altar dominates the chancel, while the pulpit and statues stand along the nave walls. The sacristy and oratory above it open from the north side, and the tower’s spire rises above the roof.
