Hochnissl

The Hochnissl is a 2,547-metre peak in the eastern Hinterautal-Vomper chain of the Karwendel range. It rises 2,000 metres above the Inn Valley, giving clear views when the weather allows. The mountain’s name appears in older guides as Hochnißl or Hochnißlspitze, reflecting local usage over the centuries. Climbing routes exist but are now largely closed for safety. The usual path from the former Karwendelrast inn at 830 metres is blocked at the start of the Ferdinand-Kogler trail by warning signs for rockfall danger. The western ridge from Lamsenscharte has been closed since 2015 because of rockslides near Steinkarlspitze, yet walkers still take it. Other routes, including the 800-metre north face, see almost no traffic. Visitors who reach the summit find a narrow ridge with steep drops on both sides. The Innsbruck skyline appears to the south, while the Wetterstein and Zugspitze stand to the north. The surrounding peaks of the Karwendel form a jagged horizon. On clear days the view stretches as far as the Dolomites. The air is thin at this height, and the silence is broken only by the wind.
