Amersham Museum
Amersham Museum stands in Old Amersham on the High Street, occupying two half-timbered buildings from the 15th century. One of these is listed Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. A herb garden grows behind the older section, while the newer part once served as the town’s post office. The museum opened to the public in 1991 and expanded in 2017 after receiving a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. A second redevelopment finished in March 2024 added a modern glass reception and a new temporary exhibition gallery named after the artist Marie-Louise von Motesiczky. The displays focus on five turning points in Amersham’s past: 1580, 1775, 1892, 1939 and 1964. Visitors can see fossils, Roman and mediaeval artefacts, and objects that tell the story of local crafts such as chairmaking, lace making and straw plait. The Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Gallery now hosts changing exhibitions of art and history. Two collection stores hold the museum’s reserve material, and a lift provides access to all floors. Inside, the museum offers an introductory exhibition gallery and a combined activity and temporary exhibition space. The modern glass reception area leads to a small gift shop. Outside, the herb garden provides a quiet spot beside the old timber-framed walls. St Mary’s Church, another historic building in Old Amersham, stands nearby for those who wish to continue exploring the town’s heritage.
