Sadnig

The Sadnig is a mountain in the Goldberg Group of the Austrian Alps. It stands at the southern edge of the range, near the tripoint of three side valleys: Großfragant, Asten and Kolmitzen. The name comes from the Slovenian word for ‘hindmost’, marking its position at the rear of the group. Three subpeaks share the name: the Hoher Sadnig, Vorsadnig, Kleiner Sadnig and Mulleter Sadnig. The Vorsadnig reaches 2,696 metres, while the Kleiner Sadnig is 2,626 metres high. The Mulleter Sadnig stands at 2,569 metres, separated from the main peak by the Sadnigscharte col at 2,484 metres. The mountain is famous for its film connection. The closing scene of *Seven Years in Tibet* was shot on its summit. Walkers usually start from the Fraganter Schutzhaus hut in the Großfragant valley or the Sadnighaus guest house in the Asten valley. Both routes meet at the Sadnigscharte before the final climb. Below the col on the Asten side lies the mountain lake of Sadnigsee. To the east, the Sadnigbach stream flows down into the Großfragantbach. At the top, the view stretches across the Goldberg Group and the Möll valley. The subpeaks form jagged ridges against the sky. The Sadnigsee reflects the Hoher Sadnig in calm weather. The paths are well marked but steep in places. The col offers a pause with wide views before the last ascent. The mountain’s name and position make it a quiet landmark in the range.
