All Saints Church, Barnacre
All Saints Church stands in the quiet village of Barnacre-with-Bonds, Lancashire, on Delph Lane. This active Anglican parish church serves a small rural community and belongs to the diocese of Blackburn. Built in the early 20th century, it replaced an earlier chapel of ease to St Thomas in Garstang. The church was designed by the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley, known for their work across the region. It was funded entirely by the Rushton family in memory of Thomas Henry Rushton. In 1936, another family member’s memorial chapel was added to the building. The church’s exterior is built of local sandstone rubble with red tiled roofs. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, north transept, south chapel, and a west tower with buttresses and a stair turret. The tower has a plain parapet and a pyramidal roof, with Perpendicular-style windows and inscribed bell openings. Inside, the two-bay arcade leads to the south chapel, which features a circular east window. The chancel contains a sedilia and piscina, and the font sits beneath the tower. Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster designed the stained glass, while the pipe organ dates from about 1875. Visitors find a peaceful place of worship surrounded by a small churchyard. The interior offers simple, dignified furnishings and clear architectural lines. The Rushton family’s gifts remain visible in the furnishings and later chapel. The churchyard holds graves from the early 20th century onward. Its Grade II listing recognises the building’s historical and architectural importance. The setting, away from main roads, adds to the sense of calm reflection.
