Villa Mautner-Jäger

The Villa Mautner-Jäger stands in Vienna’s third district, Landstraße, on the Landstraßer Hauptstraße. Built in 1902 by Franz Neumann the Younger, it mixes Baroque and Classical styles. Gustav Jäger and his wife Hertha Jäger commissioned the house; she was a leading figure in the women’s movement and hosted salons frequented by artists such as Koloman Moser and Josef Engelhart. The villa later became home to their daughter Hilde Glück and her husband Franz Glück. After decades of vacancy and decay, the building was temporarily used for exhibitions in autumn 2023. The main villa has a mansard roof and an impressive entrance hall with an elegant U-shaped oak staircase. Separate from the main house is a two-storey gatekeeper’s lodge, linked by a decorative metal gate. Behind the buildings lies a large garden containing a 1907 bowling alley designed by Paul Hoppe. The whole complex is listed as a historic monument. Visitors can walk past the villa’s iron gates and see the overgrown façade still partly covered in ivy. Inside the gatekeeper’s lodge, the ornate gate remains in place. The garden path leads to the bowling alley, a rare surviving example of early 20th-century leisure architecture. The villa’s unusual scale and detailing stand out among the modern buildings along the street.
