Haus Halt

Haus Halt is a former water castle on the Rhine near Keeken, a district of Kleve in North Rhine-Westphalia. It once stood as a four-winged structure with corner towers and an inner courtyard, the south side protected by an outer bailey. A heavy south-west tower dominated the scene, later topped with a baroque cap in the 17th century. A staircase turret in the courtyard carried a lantern at the same time. Drawings from the early 18th century show the castle still impressive despite damage. The fortress Schenkenschanz, built at the end of the 16th century, lies close by and appears in many views of Haus Halt. After a flood in 1728 destroyed the east side, further high waters gradually removed the entire ruin. Maps and paintings by Jan de Beijer and Cornelis Pronk record its changing appearance. The Bylandt family owned the site for centuries after Hadewig, Otto Doys’s daughter, married into it. Today the site is marked by grassy banks and low remnants of walls along the riverbank. Visitors find quiet spots where the Rhine flows past, with views toward the old fortress line. The area shows little of the former grandeur but still carries the memory of a once stronghold. A single tower base and scattered stones hint at the vanished structure. The surrounding landscape remains peaceful, offering a place to walk and reflect on the past.
