River Nene

The River Nene rises near Arbury Hill in Northamptonshire and flows northeast for 169 kilometres to reach the North Sea at The Wash. It drains 2,270 square kilometres across four counties and is tidal for 28 kilometres upstream of Peterborough. Four main tributaries feed the Nene: the River Ise, Wootton Brook, Willow Brook and Harper’s Brook. The river falls 91 metres in its first 27 kilometres and then less than 61 metres for the rest of its course. Navigation begins at Northampton and continues for 142 kilometres to the coast. The Nene’s name appears in 10th-century records linked to words for snow, rain or washing, though its origin remains uncertain. The pronunciation shifts from “NEN” in Northampton to “NEEN” around Peterborough, with the dividing line moving inland over time. The river powered England’s first water-powered cotton spinning mill in 1742, built on a former corn mill site southwest of the town. At Cotton End, the Nene passes under South Bridge and through Beckett’s Park beside the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus. A weir diverts water to the Nene Whitewater Centre, while the Northampton Sea Cadets train on the river using Royal Yachting Association schemes. Beyond Northampton the valley widens into a flat plain shaped by Ice Age meltwater, dotted with flooded gravel pits and lakes. At Great Billing the Billing Aquadrome offers camping, fishing and water sports beside the river. Late 19th-century watermills at Cogenhoe and Earls Barton stand among mature gravel pits and lock gates. Near Doddington a 12th-century mill once sheltered Thomas Becket after his flight from Northampton Castle. The river then curves past Wellingborough’s Victoria Mills, still milling flour since 1886, and the remains of the Roman town of Irchester.
