Schloss Illerfeld

Schloss Illerfeld is a small manor built in 1784 by Sigmund von Lupine. It stands on a slight rise near the banks of the Iller River in the hamlet of Illerfeld, part of the municipality of Ferthofen in Upper Swabia. The main building is a two-storey structure with a hipped roof and rectangular windows. It was expanded between 1820 and 1830 to include single-storey wings on either side. The road St 2009 runs close by, separating the outer park from the inner grounds. The manor contains notable historical details. In the ceiling of the southwest room on the first floor, fragments of an organ wing from St Martin’s Church in Memmingen are preserved. The stairwell features an oak railing with Empire style motifs, and the upper floor hall and two rooms have two-storey stoves with cast iron bases and terracotta vase decorations. The farm buildings include a two-storey farmhouse and a barn, both with hipped roofs and shed dormers. Beyond the manor lies a garden gateway with sandstone panels bearing coats of arms and inscriptions. The outer park contains a replica of a sculpture by M. Antonius Antius Lupus, the family’s alleged ancestor, whose original stands on the Via Appia in Rome. Further south, an obelisk was erected in memory of a favourite riding horse. Between these monuments runs a tulip tree avenue and a small park, offering quiet walks among the trees.
