Church of St Catherine

The Church of St Catherine stands in the quiet village of Fivehead, Somerset. Built in the 12th century, it is one of England’s oldest churches and holds Grade I listed status. Its three-bay nave and two-bay chancel rest on sturdy buttresses, while the south porch door still shows its original Norman chevron arch. Inside, a Norman font survives from the church’s earliest days, and a Jacobean pulpit from 1634 adds later craftsmanship. Six bells, restored in 2007, ring out over the surrounding fields. The church is recognised for its architectural importance and sits beside Swell Court Farmhouse, another Grade I listed building. In the churchyard, two chest tombs from 1619 are also protected as historic monuments. The parish belongs to the benefice of Curry Rivel with Fivehead and Swell, part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. These connections show how the church has shaped the community for centuries.
