Altstädter Pfarrkirche

The Altstädter Kirche stands in Erlangen’s old town as a Baroque Lutheran parish church. Its sandstone walls rise above the Martin-Luther-Platz, flanked by a tall west tower that has dominated the skyline since 1726. The church was built between 1709 and 1721 to plans by Wenzel Perner, with local builder Johann Georg Kannhäuser helping to shape its details. Earlier buildings on the site had been destroyed by fire in 1632 and again in 1706, so the present structure is the third church to occupy this spot. The tower’s height of 55.5 metres was reached only after years of work, and the interior was finally consecrated in March 1721. In 2019 the church hosted a contemporary art show called ‘waste and void’, proving its continuing role in the city’s cultural life. Inside, the well-proportioned nave is divided by pilasters and covered by a geometric stucco ceiling designed by Kannhäuser. A wooden gallery runs along three sides, though the second tier was removed in 1960. The pulpit-altar of 1720–21, carved by Johann David Räntz and Johann Philipp Göbel, dominates the chancel. Older treasures include five small Gothic wooden figures from about 1500 and three bronze epitaphs from the 16th century. The organ on the west gallery, built in 1961 and restored in 1996–97, uses a Baroque case from around 1720 and offers 46 registers across three manuals and pedal. Outside, the church’s west front faces the square with three bays and a central tower half-embedded in the nave. Round-headed windows and Tuscan pilasters give the façade rhythm, while north and west doors provide entry. Four bronze bells, cast in 1957, ring in the key of d, f, g and b. Each year the Bergkirchweih festival draws more than a million visitors to the slopes below the Burgberg, turning the church into a focal point for celebration.
