Weiter Karkopf
The Weiter Karkopf stands in the Geigenkamm subgroup of the Ötztal Alps, rising to 2,777 metres in the Austrian state of Tyrol near Umhausen. It belongs to a cluster of ten peaks all sharing the name Karkopf, most of them within a few kilometres of one another. The mountain’s neighbours include the Mitter Karkopf at 2,588 metres and the Blosse at 2,536 metres, while the Kreuzjochspitze reaches 2,675 metres just to the north.
Reaching the summit demands a steady climb of about 1,000 metres from the Armelenhütte at 1,747 metres. The normal route passes the Erster Karkopf at 2,513 metres before the final ridge. An alternative path goes through the Vorderer Tumpenalm at 1,831 metres and the Hinterer Tumpenalm at 2,191 metres, crossing high alpine meadows and steep rock slabs.
On the summit visitors find a broad limestone crest with views across the Inn valley and the Stubai group. The air is thin, the silence deep, and the only sounds are the wind and the occasional jingle of a cowbell drifting up from the Tumpen valleys below. The panorama includes the Wildspitze, the highest point of the Ötztal Alps, and the distant peaks of the Silvretta range on clear days.
