Hospital Lienz

The Allgemeine öffentliche Bezirkskrankenhaus Lienz stands in the town of Lienz in East Tirol. It began as a citizens’ hospital and moved to its present site in Emanuel-von-Hibler-Straße in 1931. The main building is a long four-storey block with a hipped roof and a chapel inside the entrance wing.
The hospital is worth visiting for its architecture and history. The building was planned by Hans Menardi and opened by Federal President Wilhelm Miklas. Later extensions were designed by Rudolf Furtschegger, Hans Buchrainer, Otto Gruber and Rudolf Stotter. A modern entrance wing was added and the chapel was rebuilt in 2001.
Visitors find a large modern hospital with several wings added to the original block. The chapel is two storeys high, its apse made of glass and steel tubes, and faces north. The grounds lie east of the Moarhof fields and still show traces of the old village of Patriasdorf.
