Stadtpalais Waldburg-Wolfegg (Bregenz)

The Palais Waldburg-Wolfegg stands in Bregenz’s Kirchstraße, a former noble residence now housing the Vorarlberg State Archive in two separate buildings. The older part, built between 1688 and 1690 by Johann Mathias Christoph von Bildstein, is a three-storey rectangular structure with a steep gable roof. A later extension added at the rear in 1901 enlarged the building for Landeshauptmann Otto Ender. The entire complex, including a 1930s concrete archive store, is protected as a historic monument. The palace reflects its changing uses over centuries. After Graf Ferdinand Ludwig zu Wolfegg bought it in 1732, he made alterations and later rented rooms to high-ranking officials. Among its notable residents were Franz Xaver von Harrant, Graf Franz von Seeau and Franz Vintler during Bavarian rule. In 1850, Sebastian Ritter von Froschauer, the first governor of Vorarlberg, lived here before the state purchased it in 1901. Inside, the entrance hall and staircase feature cross-vaulted ceilings with delicate stucco trim. The main façade shows five paired windows with green shutters above a grand Tuscan-columned doorway. Behind the building, the plain side walls contrast with the ornate street front, while the archive extension stores documents in a functional concrete wing. The garden at the front and the quiet side streets give the site a dignified, unhurried atmosphere.
