South Wimbledon tube station

South Wimbledon station stands at the corner of Merton High Street and Morden Road in south-west London. It belongs to the Morden branch of the Northern line, linking Colliers Wood with Morden. The station marks the boundary between London fare zones three and four. Its original name, Merton Grove, was changed before opening to reflect its position south of Wimbledon. The name on maps and signage later dropped the extra word, leaving just South Wimbledon. The building was designed by Charles Holden for the Underground Electric Railways Company. Frank Pick chose Holden after rejecting designs by Stanley Heaps. The station has a modernist look, built as a white Portland-stone box with a glazed front divided by roundel-shaped columns. It is the southernmost Underground station whose platforms still lie in tunnels. In 1926 the station opened as part of the Morden extension of the City & South London Railway. Visitors find a Grade II listed façade with a large roundel set into the glazed screen. Shops flank the entrance on Merton High Street. The station’s platforms lie below ground, reached through the ticket hall. Nearby Morden Road tram stop offers Tramlink services, and bus routes serve the area day and night. A future Sutton Link project may add new platforms close to the present station for trams or buses heading to Sutton.
