Langbetten von Harrislee

The Langbetten of Harrislee stand in the flat farmland of Schleswig-Holstein, just 2,500 metres west of Harrislee near the village of Simondys. They lie only twenty metres from the German–Danish border, a quiet line of grassy mounds pointing north and south. Two long rows of standing stones once formed these Neolithic graves, built by the Trichterbecher culture between 3500 and 2800 BC. Ernst Sprockhoff recorded them in his Atlas of Megalithic Tombs of Germany as site number 14. All the stones have vanished, probably taken by later stonecutters. Only shallow hollows mark where the burial chambers once held their dead. These graves are worth the journey because they belong to one of Europe’s oldest monumental traditions. The Trichterbecher people left no written records, so every surviving earthwork tells a story of ritual and community. Sprockhoff’s survey shows how widely such long barrows spread across northern Germany. Harrislee’s pair survive as rare traces of a culture that shaped the landscape long before written history. Their position close to the modern border also reminds visitors of how frontiers shift while ancient places remain. Visitors find two low, grass-covered ridges running parallel for about sixty metres. The northern ends are slightly wider, where the chambers once opened. A farm track passes close by, and the fields around grow barley and rye. On clear days the Sønderjylland hills rise faintly to the north-west. The border itself is unmarked here, so the site feels both remote and accessible. Standing between the hollows, one can imagine the builders carrying stones across the flat land nearly five thousand years ago.
