Dreifaltigkeitssäule

The Dreifaltigkeitssäule stands in the heart of Linz’s Hauptplatz, a grand square famed for its elegant Baroque architecture. This 18th-century plague column rises 20 metres above the cobbled ground, crafted from white Untersberger marble. Its creation followed Linz’s escape from disaster in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, including the Great Turkish War, the War of Spanish Succession and a near-catastrophic fire. Emperor Charles VI, the Upper Austrian estates and local people funded the monument, designed by Antonio Beduzzi and carved by Sebastian Stumpfegger between 1717 and 1723. The old town pillory was moved to make way for its construction, marking a shift from punishment to public gratitude. The column’s three sides bear inscribed tablets with the imperial, provincial and city coats of arms, each symbolising the patrons’ shared devotion. Statues of plague saints Sebastian and Charles Borromeo, and fire patron Saint Florian, guard the base, while a gilded copper Trinity crowns the summit. The Baroque sculptor chose the south-facing side for the emperor’s shield, aligning it with the sun’s path. A moon-crowned Virgin Mary and joyful cherubs adorn the shaft, reflecting the era’s religious fervour. Centuries of flood, war and debate have shaped its story, from wartime removal of ornament to post-war restoration by Matthäus Schlager. Visitors find a commanding presence in the square, surrounded by arcaded town houses and the Landhaus. The column’s inscriptions face key buildings: the Landeswappen towards the provincial government, the city arms near the old town hall, and the imperial crest to the south. At ground level, the statues of saints stand close enough to study their flowing robes and serene expressions. The golden Trinity glints above, drawing the eye upward through layers of Baroque artistry. The square itself remains a lively place, where locals and travellers pause beneath the towering monument.
