Repton School

Repton School stands on the site of a former Augustinian priory in the village of Repton, Derbyshire. The priory was founded in the 12th century and dissolved in the 16th century, leaving behind fragments of its buildings. These include the bases of columns, parts of door surrounds and Prior Overton’s Tower, which dates from after 1437. The school was established in 1557 using funds left by Sir John Port, and it began teaching boys in the priory’s remaining structures. For four centuries it educated only boys, admitting girls from the 1970s and becoming fully co-educational in the 1990s. Among its notable former pupils are athletes Harold Abrahams and David Cochrane, writers Christopher Isherwood and Edward Upward, and poet Vernon Watkins. The school’s history is marked by both educational innovation and social tensions. In the 1830s pupils chose a “Cock of the School” through competition, a custom described in 1907. In the 1860s a royal commission examined Repton and other endowed schools, helping shape later education reforms. Headmasters in the early 20th century introduced civics classes and political debates, though these provoked controversy. During the First World War nearly two thousand Old Reptonians served, and 355 died; a war memorial was dedicated in 1922. The school also produced Olympic champion Harold Abrahams and poets such as Vernon Watkins. Visitors walk past remnants of the priory embedded in the school grounds. Prior Overton’s Tower and sections of column bases and doorways remain visible. The 19th-century chapel and the grade II-listed gymnasium stand among later buildings like the Science Block and the Armoury. The former tithe barn now houses the Art School. The school’s playing fields and gardens provide a quiet setting in the heart of Repton village.
