Church Of St Illtyd, St Gwynno And St Dyfodwg

The Church of St Illtyd, St Gwynno and St Dyfodwg stands in Llantrisant, a town in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Glamorgan, Wales. Built close to Llantrisant Castle, it began as a Norman church. Little of the original structure remains, with only the baptismal font, part of the south door and the lower western arch of the nave surviving from that period. The tower, about 21 metres high, holds six bells. The church is a Grade II* listed building. The church is worth visiting for its long history and the details it preserves. It was founded at an early date and dedicated to three Welsh saints. The tower and west end of the nave were restored in the 19th century, and a white marble baptistery was added under the tower. The church’s bells, cast in 1718, were made in a foundry discovered during restoration work. The brass lectern and candelabra, along with the communion plate, were gifts from local families and others connected to the parish. Inside, the church has a carved oak screen dividing it from the tower, erected in memory of the vicar Canon Jones. The east window, with its Latin inscription, was presented by the Prichard family. The south window honours three brothers, and the chancel contains windows for the vicar Rev. Evan Morgan and his wife. Outside, an ancient slab with a carved processional cross lies near the church, marking its early Christian heritage.
