St John the Evangelist's Church, Yealand Conyers

St John the Evangelist’s Church stands in the quiet village of Yealand Conyers, Lancashire, built in 1838 and later extended in 1861 and 1882. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Blackburn and is mainly constructed from limestone, with a nave, north aisle, chancel and west tower. Inside, the church features a west gallery and stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt. The building is listed at Grade II, recognising its special interest and the need for preservation. The church’s design has been attributed to George Webster, who also created memorial tablets inside. It originally served as a chapel of ease for St Oswald’s parish in Warton before becoming a parish in its own right in 1870. The church’s architecture reflects its 19th-century origins, with a mix of limestone, sandstone and pebbledashed tower. The exterior includes pointed doorways, lancet windows and a battlemented parapet at the top of the tower. Inside, octagonal piers support the arcade, and the west gallery overlooks the nave. The stained glass by Carl Almquist of Shrigley and Hunt dates to 1889 and depicts the Good Shepherd. The pipe organ was built by the Jardine Organ Company. The church’s simple, functional design was noted by architectural historians Hartwell and Pevsner, who described it as ‘low and homely’. Visitors find a modest but well-preserved church set in a peaceful rural setting. The interior offers a sense of quiet dignity, with its historic furnishings and memorials. The stained glass and organ add colour and sound to the space, while the exterior’s stonework and windows reflect the craftsmanship of the 19th century.
