Felbrigg Hall

Felbrigg Hall stands in a quiet corner of Norfolk, a 17th-century country house built by the Wyndham family. The house keeps its original Jacobean stonework outside and Georgian rooms inside, with carved family arms above the door. A high brick wall surrounds the garden, where an 18th-century orangery still stands beside old orchards. The estate once belonged to generations of Wyndhams, including John Wyndham who advised Henry VIII. After the last Wyndham died in 1810, the house passed through private hands until Robert Ketton-Cremer gave it to the National Trust in 1969. The house and its 1,760-acre grounds are worth visiting for the unchanged architecture and the stories held in every room. The Wyndhams added land and planted orchards in the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping the estate we see today. Robert Ketton-Cremer, the last private owner, left detailed books about Norfolk’s past and a memorial to his brother in the woods. His own life and books are part of the house’s history, recorded in volumes like Felbrigg: the Story of a House. The gardens and woods also carry layers of memory, from medieval fields to modern conservation. Visitors walk along marked paths through Felbrigg Woods, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and follow the Weavers’ Way long-distance trail. The west garden mixes Victorian lawns with dark shrubberies and North American trees such as red oaks and western red cedars. A walled kitchen garden grows fruit varieties known in the 19th century, while double borders and herbaceous borders frame seasonal colour. The National Collection of colchicums grows here, adding autumn blooms to the landscape. Inside, the Georgian interiors and Jacobean carvings remain as the Wyndhams left them, unchanged for centuries.
