The Eiszeitmuseum in Lütjenburg explores how the Ice Age shaped northern Germany. It stands beside the old tower-mound castle on the edge of this small town in Schleswig-Holstein. A local association of about a hundred members runs the museum, keeping it open all year though winter hours are shorter.

Inside, displays show fossils, minerals and rocks that tell the story of the Ice Age. Visitors see how the glaciers carved the hilly east coast, the sandy centre and the flat western plains. The museum also builds teaching collections that cover geology, biology and the daily life of Ice Age people. Special exhibitions appear regularly on related themes.

The building itself sits next to the ancient mound fortification, linking past landscapes with human history. A focus on hands-on learning brings Ice Age science to life for all age groups. Visitors leave with a clearer picture of how ice once moved the land that now forms Schleswig-Holstein.

Opening hours and admission can change with the season. Check before you go: eiszeitmuseum.de
