Church of St Bridget, Chelvey

The Church of St Bridget stands in the small village of Chelvey, Brockley, Somerset. Built in the 12th century, it is one of the oldest surviving churches in the area. English Heritage recognises it as a Grade I listed building, placing it among the nation’s finest historic structures. The church honours St Brigid of Kildare, an Irish saint whose influence reached far beyond Ireland. Inside, a Norman south doorway and an octagonal font remain from the earliest period. A Purbeck marble slab in the Tynte chapel carries an inscription from the mid-13th century. The church is worth visiting for its rare medieval carvings and surviving furnishings. The knight slab in the Tynte chapel shows a 13th-century warrior in full surcoat, holding spear and scabbard. Near the pulpit stands a replica sand-filled hourglass in an iron frame, once used by preachers to measure sermon length. The churchyard cross, standing 1.5 metres high, was given its box-and-ball finial in 1877. By the late 20th century the building had suffered serious water damage to its stonework. A restoration appeal in 2008 raised funds for repairs, new lighting and an organ. Inside, visitors find a simple nave with the Norman doorway on the south side. The octagonal font sits near the entrance, its shape echoing medieval craftsmanship. The Tynte chapel holds the knight slab beneath the Jacobean altar table, its weathered inscription still legible. The iron hourglass frame beside the pulpit recalls the discipline of early preaching. Outside, the churchyard cross rises on its octagonal base, topped by the 19th-century ball finial. The restored interior now offers a quiet space for reflection after centuries of use and repair.
