Ochsenbrunnlacke

Ochsenbrunnlacke is a shallow lake in Burgenland, eastern Austria. It lies in the Seewinkel region, close to the Neusiedler See, between the villages of Illmitz and Apetlon. The lake sits just one metre above Austria’s lowest point at 115 metres above sea level. Its surface covers 0.24 square kilometres, stretching 0.6 kilometres from north to south and 0.7 kilometres from east to west. The lake is surrounded by farmland, with fields of crops and pastures. The flat landscape offers few natural barriers, making the water’s edge easy to reach. Wind often ripples the surface, stirring up fine silt from the lake bed. In summer, the water warms quickly, attracting dragonflies and water birds. Visitors find a quiet spot away from busy resorts. A dirt track runs along the eastern shore, giving views across the open water. The area is popular with birdwatchers, especially in spring and autumn when migrants pause here. The lake’s shallow depth means it can shrink to a patch of damp earth in dry spells.
