Tamberg

Tamberg is a mountain massif in the Toten Gebirge range, rising to 1516 metres above the Steyr valley near Windischgarsten in Upper Austria. It stands between the Windischgarstner basin to the north and the Stodertal valley to the south, forming a forested island of lower mountains among higher alpine ridges. The massif stretches eight kilometres from northwest to southeast, with steep cliffs on its southwest side dropping up to 800 metres to the Steyr. To the south and east the slopes become gentler and are partly settled. The Tamberg’s main peaks reach 1516 metres and 1502 metres, while lower summits such as the Schmeißerkogel and Schölmberg mark its edges. Geologists recognise three major rock layers meeting here: obertriassic main dolomite on the Tamberg itself, older Gutenstein and Haselgebirge formations around Vorderstoder, and Dachstein limestone on the southern ridges. Ice age glaciers shaped the valleys, leaving end moraines and small peat bogs like the Filzmoos. Visitors find dense beech and fir forests covering the lower slopes, with open meadows higher up. The massif has few marked trails but offers quiet walking through mixed woodland and along the Steyr’s banks. Views open towards the Priel, Sengsengebirge and Warscheneck ranges on clear days. The area remains little developed, giving a sense of wilderness close to the Steyr valley.
