River Don

The River Don is a 15.4-kilometre tributary of the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear, North East England. It begins near Springwell and flows east for about six kilometres before turning north. The river passes through a culvert beneath Brockley Whins Metro station and emerges at Monkton. It runs under Jarrow Bridge before joining the River Tyne at Jarrow. For much of its upper length, the Don marks the boundary between Gateshead and Sunderland. The Don has several tributaries, including Bede’s Burn, Monkton Burn, Calfclose Burn, Station Burn, Usworth Burn and Whittle Burn. In the mid-20th century its mouth was altered, and a small stretch of the old course still remains near the river’s end. The Don is one of several rivers flowing into the Tyne, contributing to the wider river system of the region. Its route reflects changes made to manage water flow and urban development over time. Visitors can follow the Don’s path from its source near Springwell down to its mouth at Jarrow. The river passes under bridges and through culverts, offering glimpses of its altered course. Near Monkton, remnants of the old riverbed can still be seen. The surrounding area includes parts of Gateshead and Sunderland, with the river acting as a boundary in places. The Don’s quiet waters and industrial surroundings provide a contrast to the broader Tyne landscape.
