Dreieinigkeitskirche Gmünd in Kärnten

The Dreieinigkeitskirche stands on a corner plot beside the Lieser river in Gmünd, a small town in Carinthia. Built as a daughter church for the nearby Dornbach parish, it replaced an earlier plan to convert the old Pankratiuskirche. After a competition in 1996, architects Gert Ziegler and Felix Orsini-Rosenberg produced the final design, completed in 2001.
Inside, a circular ground floor holds the worship space under a barrel-vaulted ceiling. A central foyer leads to the circular nave seating 150, with a diagonal niche for baptisms. A freestanding bell tower of four concrete columns shelters a single bell above the entrance porch. The upper floor houses the organ gallery reached by a simple staircase.
The altar hangs beneath a floating cross carved with Roman numerals for the fourteen Stations of the Cross. A small spring-fed fountain flows through the baptismal niche into a floor basin. The Christ torso on the cross came from a dismantled wooden house in the Möll valley, adding a piece of local history to the modern interior.
