Anne Frank Zentrum

The Anne Frank Zentrum stands in central Berlin, a modern museum dedicated to Anne Frank and her diary. It occupies a building near the Hackesche Höfe in Mitte, a lively quarter known for its courtyards and cultural scene. The centre runs exhibitions and educational programmes for schools and the public. Its work focuses on combating anti-Semitism, prejudice and all forms of discrimination. It was founded in 1994 after a travelling exhibition toured six Berlin boroughs. The centre opened in 1998 under an agreement with the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. It grew from a Society of Friends set up to support the 1995 exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of liberation from Nazism. The permanent exhibition, “Anne Frank. Here & Now,” opened in 2006 and links Anne’s personal story to the wider world. Berlin teenagers contribute reflections that appear in the displays. Travelling shows take these themes across Germany and beyond. Visitors find a permanent exhibition tracing Anne’s life from her childhood in Frankfurt to her years in hiding and her death in Bergen-Belsen. Modern media and contemporary quotes from Berlin students are woven into the displays. The building sits among the restored courtyards of Hackesche Höfe, a short walk from Rosenthaler Platz. The centre also hosts workshops and events that explore democracy and human rights. Its programmes challenge right-wing extremism and encourage open discussion.
