Schloss Kapfenburg stands on a rocky spur high above Lauchheim in the Härtsfeld region. It was once a commandery of the Teutonic Knights, a medieval military order founded in 1190. The site first appears in records in 1311, when it belonged to the Counts of Oettingen. In 1364 Marquardt the Zoller acquired the castle for the order’s Franconian bailiwick. Over the centuries successive commanders expanded the buildings, turning a medieval fortress into a grand residence.

The castle’s architecture reflects its changing roles. The 1534 bastion guards the main entrance, while the Westernachbau of 1538 provided noble living quarters. Under Commander Johann Eustach von Westernach a major rebuilding programme created the principal block with its richly decorated façade. The knights’ chapel and the Knights’ Hall still display fine stucco work by Gerhard Schmidt. Portraits of Grand Masters and commanders line the walls, alongside large heraldic panels that survive from the original furnishings.

Today the castle houses a music academy and hosts concerts and festivals. Visitors can walk through the restored Knights’ Hall and chapel on the ground floor. The Lorenzkapelle, built as a private burial place, now contains memorial slabs for Teutonic knights. Beyond the bastion lie former farm buildings and a small terraced garden. The view across the surrounding countryside stretches far into the distance.
