Burgrest Edelmannshof
The Burgrest Edelmannshof stands in Rappach, a village within the Bretzfeld municipality in the Hohenlohekreis of Baden-Württemberg. First recorded in 1215 with the Lords of Rappach, the medieval stronghold once commanded a water-filled moat. Today only faint traces of walls and ditches remain, marking where the fortress once rose above the valley. The site lies close to the present-day Edelmannshof farmstead, which occupies the original castle grounds. The landscape still carries the shape of the old defences, though little else survives above ground. The ruins recall a small but strategic stronghold from the 13th century. By 1341 it was already called a ‘Burgstadel’, a fortified granary or storehouse, suggesting its role shifted over time. The Lords of Rappach held the site until the line died out, after which it passed to other local nobles. Archaeologists recognise the earthworks as typical of early medieval motte-and-bailey designs. Despite centuries of ploughing and building, the buried foundations remain intact beneath the fields. Visitors find a quiet rural spot where the past speaks through subtle earthworks. A low mound and shallow ditches outline the former inner ward, while the surrounding farmland stretches away under gentle slopes. The Edelmannshof farmhouse now occupies the centre of the old bailey, its modern buildings blending into the historic footprint. A walk around the fields reveals the faint lines of the moat and ramparts, best seen after rain when the soil darkens along their courses. The scene is peaceful, with Rappach’s scattered houses nearby and the Hohenlohe countryside rolling in every direction.
