Schloss Mörmoosen

Schloss Mörmoosen stood on a hill in the village of the same name in the Tüßling district of Altötting. The site was once a medieval and early modern Pflegschloss, a type of administrative castle used by Bavarian dukes. A late medieval chapel survives beneath the turf, marking the spot where the castle once stood. The castle’s history reaches back to the 12th century, when it belonged to Salzburg’s archbishop. In 1285 Salzburg claimed the castle lay on its land, citing a grant of 930. By 1260 the castle and its court had passed to the Bavarian duke, though most estates remained in church hands until the 18th century. A succession of noble families served as Pfleger, or castle stewards, from 1366 onwards. Today the only visible remnant is the former chapel of St Peter and Paul. The small square building has a simple pitched roof and a 19th-century bell turret. Its core dates from the 14th century, with 18th-century Baroque alterations inside. The chapel stands on the hilltop where the castle once defended the surrounding countryside.
