Alhambra Theatre

The Alhambra Theatre stands in Dunfermline, Fife, on the corner of Canmore Street and New Row. Designed by local architect John Fraser, it was built over two years from red brick and opened in 1922. At the time it was the largest brick building in the town. The theatre was planned by Scottish and Provincial Theatres Ltd and later managed by Alhambra Dunfermline Ltd. Its construction nearly ran out of funds before contractors accepted shares instead of final payments. The theatre began as both a cinema and a live-performance space, opening with a film in 1922. It served as a cinema until 1965, then became a bingo hall until 2006. After standing empty in 2007, it was restored and reopened in 2008 under new ownership. In 2016 financial difficulties were reported, but the building remains in use. Its grade B listed status recognises its largely intact fine interior. Visitors find a theatre that hosts major musicals, comedy shows and children’s performances. Acts have included Blood Brothers, The Rocky Horror Show, Grease and Chicago. Top comedians such as Kevin Bridges, Alan Carr and Dara Ó Briain have appeared on its stage. Ballet, opera and orchestras also perform here regularly. The Scottish National Theatre has staged plays including The House of Bernarda Alba and Dracula. The Mousetrap has visited twice, and seasonal shows entertain younger audiences throughout the year.
