Wrest Park
Wrest Park is a country estate in Silsoe, Bedfordshire, set in formal gardens around a grand mansion. The house and gardens are both Grade I listed, with the gardens containing Grade II listed buildings, monuments and statues. An early-18th-century baroque pavilion designed by Thomas Archer stands at the garden entrance, aligned with the house’s main axis. Long water features and paths lead from the mansion to the pavilion, creating a grand approach. The estate has been shaped by successive generations of the de Grey family over seven centuries. The house was rebuilt in the 1830s by Thomas de Grey, 2nd Earl de Grey, in a rare Louis XV style unique in England. His visits to Paris and illustrations from Jacques-François Blondel’s publications inspired the design. The interior state rooms feature Rococo-style gilt and white plasterwork revived in the 19th century. Three rooms retain rare wallpapers, and the plan and decoration have been preserved with care. English Heritage now manages the estate and houses an archaeological collection of over 150,000 artefacts in a purpose-built store. Visitors walk through formal gardens past canals, woodland and canalside walks laid out in the 18th century. The mansion’s north front, with its thirteen bays and leaded cupolas, dominates the view. Inside, the single-storey entrance hall leads to a staircase hall filled with statues. The estate has been used as a filming location for period dramas such as *Belgravia* and *Bridgerton*, adding to its atmosphere.
