Kleiner Gleichberg

The Kleiner Gleichberg is a hill in Thuringia, standing just east of Römhild village in the Grabfeld region. At 641 metres it is the lower of the two Gleichberge peaks, the higher Großer Gleichberg lying less than three kilometres away. A Celtic oppidum called Steinsburg once occupied the summit, and its remains are still visible today. The hill’s prominence reaches more than two hundred metres, giving it a clear presence in the landscape despite its modest height. A single footpath leads from the Steinsburg Museum across the saddle between the two peaks and then spirals up the final metres to the top. The summit offers wide views across the surrounding countryside. In winter the leafless trees reveal long distances, taking in the Thuringian Forest, the Rhön Mountains and the Haßberge Hills. To the north-west the ruined Straufhain Castle can be seen, while Coburg Fortress appears on the horizon to the south-west. In summer the outlook is more restricted by dense foliage, yet the rocky plateau remains a quiet place to stand above the treetops. Visitors reach the top by following the marked trail from the museum. The path crosses open farmland before climbing gently between the two Gleichberge summits. Near the top the route turns in gentle circles up the final slope, ending on a flat rock platform. From here the panorama stretches in every direction, showing distant ridges and historic ruins framed against the sky.
