University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien

Fachhochschule Technikum Wien stands in Vienna’s 20th district, Brigittenau, on the flat land beside the Danube Canal. The main campus spreads across a modern complex completed in 2013, with a second site in Floridsdorf’s ENERGYbase building. Around 4,700 students study here on more than thirty degree courses. The university was founded in 1994 and became Vienna’s first university of applied sciences in 2000. It introduced part-time courses in 2001 and switched to the Bologna system in 2003. The institution is Austria’s largest technical university of applied sciences by student numbers. It runs four faculties covering computer science, electronics, industrial engineering and life sciences. Research focuses on automation, embedded systems, renewable energy and tissue engineering. The rector since 2021 is Sylvia Geyer, who succeeded Fritz Schmöllebeck. In 2024 the university marked its 30th anniversary by launching programmes in hydrogen technology and quantum technologies. Visitors find a compact campus with lecture halls, laboratories and open study spaces. The architecture is functional, with large windows and wide corridors. Outside, tram lines run past the main entrance on Höchstädtplatz. Inside, students work on projects with local companies and start-ups. The atmosphere is quiet but purposeful, shaped by the constant movement of staff and researchers.
