Göllersbach

The Göllersbach is a small river in Lower Austria that flows into the Danube. It begins near Schloss Ernstbrunn in the Weinviertel region at about 320 metres above sea level. The upper stretch is called the Kleiner Göllersbach and winds through the Ernstbrunner Wald before turning south near Aspersdorf.
The river is worth following because it once powered forty-seven mills along its banks. Many of these old mill buildings still stand, though now used for other purposes. Its name comes from the Slavic word for ‘stag’, showing the area’s early settlement history.
Walkers find a gentle valley with quiet villages like Enzersdorf im Thale and Göllersdorf. The river passes through the Schlosspark Schönborn in Göllersdorf before reaching Stockerau. Near its mouth it joins the Danube’s old arm called the Stockerauer Arm at the Krumpenwasser.
