Maltschacher See

The Maltschacher See lies five kilometres south-east of Feldkirchen in Carinthia, a shallow lake surrounded by a swamp on its western side. Water from the lake flows into the Strußnigteich, a carp breeding pond four kilometres away. The landscape is calm, with reeds and aquatic plants once growing thickly around the shore. The lake supports fifteen fish species today, including perch, bream, bleak, carp and tench. Grass carp introduced in 1975 damaged the plant life but are no longer seen since 1991. The area remains important for local wildlife and fishing. Visitors find a campsite, bungalow park and restaurants along the shore. Nearby are another campground and several guesthouses for longer stays. The setting offers quiet walks beside the water and views across the flat landscape.
