Embankment tube station

Embankment is a London Underground station in the City of Westminster. It sits between Charing Cross and Waterloo on the Bakerloo line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. On the Circle and District lines it lies between Westminster and Temple stations. The station has two entrances, one on Victoria Embankment and the other on Villiers Street. It stands beside Victoria Embankment Gardens and is close to Charing Cross station, Embankment Pier, Hungerford Bridge and Cleopatra’s Needle. The station opened in 1870 as Charing Cross when the District Railway extended its line from Westminster to Blackfriars. In 1906 the Bakerloo line arrived with deep-level platforms beneath the original station. The Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway followed in 1914, adding another deep-level platform and reducing interchange time. Sir John Betjeman once called the new building the most charming of all the Edwardian and neo-Georgian Renaissance stations. Visitors find four separate platforms served by the Bakerloo, Circle, District and Northern lines. The deep-level platforms are reached by escalators from the sub-surface ticket hall. Public art by Robyn Denny in coloured lines runs along the passageways and platforms. The northbound Northern line platform still plays the original ‘Mind the gap’ announcement recorded by Oswald Laurence. Nearby stand the Savoy Chapel, the Savoy Hotel and the theatres on Villiers Street.
