Killingholme South Low Lighthouse

Killingholme South Low Lighthouse stands on the Humber bank near the oil storage terminal in South Killingholme parish. The parish stretches from the Humber Estuary foreshore southwest through the village to a boundary near Ulceby railway station. Its length is about six kilometres and its width about two kilometres, with land rising from less than five metres to seventeen metres above sea level. Half the parish is farmland drained by man-made ditches, while the other half is heavy industry including refineries and power stations. Three 19th-century lighthouses line the Humber bank near the industrial site. The lighthouse was built in 1836 to guide ships on the Humber alongside its partner, Killingholme High. Together they marked the safe channel to the south, while different pairs guided vessels northwards. The North Low Light has been inactive since 1920, leaving the South Low Light as one of the remaining historic beacons. The brickworks that once operated nearby have long since closed, and the fish meal works with its jetty is gone. Today the lighthouse stands among storage tanks and pipelines, a quiet reminder of the area’s maritime past. Visitors find a white-painted tower with a lantern room on top, set beside modern industrial buildings. The surrounding path follows the Humber bank offering views across the wide estuary to distant refinery stacks. Nearby are remnants of the old brickworks and the former railway sidings that once served the docks. The village centre lies a short walk inland, where a 17th-century timber-framed house called The Nook survives beside the church. The contrast between the historic lighthouse and the surrounding industrial landscape gives the place its quiet character.
