Eas Aboist

Eas Aboist stands in the western Highlands where the land drops steeply to the coast. The river here falls in a single leap of more than twenty metres, making it one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in Scotland. Its name comes from the Gaelic word ‘eas’, which simply means waterfall, and it sits among the many falls that mark the wet, rugged landscape. The falls are part of a wider pattern of Highland rivers that plunge down the steep western slopes. Scotland has more than 150 named waterfalls, most gathered in this mountainous region where the terrain forces water over cliffs and ledges. Names like ‘linn’ and ‘spout’ appear elsewhere in the country, but ‘eas’ dominates the Gaelic-speaking north. Visitors reach the falls by following a path through wet woodland where ferns and mosses cling to the rocks. The spray rises high above the plunge pool, and on calm days a rainbow may appear in the mist. The surrounding hills rise steeply, their slopes covered in heather and grass, while the river below rushes away towards the sea.
