Castle Loch
Castle Loch is a shallow, nutrient-rich lake just outside the town of Lochmaben in Dumfries and Galloway. It covers about one hundred hectares and sits beside the remains of Lochmaben Castle. The castle ruins stand at the southern edge of the water, marking the spot where the loch begins. The town itself lies a short walk to the north, its streets leading straight to the water’s edge. The loch is surrounded by flat, open ground that stretches away from the water in every direction. A single road runs close to the western shore, giving easy access for visitors. The whole scene is quiet and open, with few buildings interrupting the view. The loch is one of the most important wintering sites in Britain for the pink-footed goose. Hundreds of these geese arrive each year to feed and rest on the water. Goosander, a type of sawbill duck, also overwinter here in good numbers. Castle Loch has been named a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It holds Site of Special Scientific Interest status as well, recognising its value for wildlife. The loch’s shallow, fertile waters support a wide range of plant and insect life. These in turn attract the birds that visit every winter. The combination of water, open ground and protected status makes it a key spot for conservation. Visitors find a broad, flat path running along the western shore, wide enough for walking or cycling. Benches are placed at intervals so people can sit and watch the birds. The castle ruins lie just beyond the path, their broken walls rising above the water. From the shore, the view stretches across the loch to distant fields and low hills. On calm days the water reflects the sky, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. The town’s buildings appear small in the distance, keeping the focus on the natural scene. The whole place offers a quiet place to stand and watch the changing light on the water.
