The Theatre am Potsdamer Platz stands in Berlin’s Tiergarten district beside the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz. Designed by Renzo Piano, the building opened in June 1999 with 1 754 seats, making it one of Germany’s largest theatres. Its stage has hosted world premieres such as Disney’s Der Glöckner von Notre Dame in 2002. Stage Entertainment took over in 2002 and later introduced the Blue Man Group in 2004. The theatre also became the Berlinale Palast every February for the Berlin International Film Festival.

Notable productions include Mamma Mia! with ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad in 2007, Dirty Dancing from 2009 to 2010, and Hinterm Horizont with Udo Lindenberg’s songs from 2011 to 2016. The venue also hosted the Goldene Henne awards from 2011 until 2013. Plans for a Cirque du Soleil resident show, Alizé, were confirmed in 2024 for 2025.

Inside, the auditorium seats over seventeen hundred people in sweeping red and gold tiers. The stage can be cleared entirely to turn the space into a cinema for the Berlinale. Outside, the plaza is lined with modern cafés and the glass facades of Potsdamer Platz’s office towers.
