Gärtner- und Häckermuseum

The Gärtner- und Häckermuseum sits in Bamberg’s old Gärtnerviertel, a district shaped by market gardeners and wine growers. It occupies a restored gardener’s house from the late 19th century, standing among narrow lanes and small allotments. The building itself shows how families combined living space with workrooms and a working garden. The museum traces the lives of Bamberg’s gardeners and wine makers through reconstructed rooms. A parlour, kitchen, storeroom and sleeping chamber recreate a household around 1900. A separate display presents tools and costumes used in local religious festivals. After the 2012 Landesgartenschau it reopened with new exhibits and a clearer path through the house. Visitors walk through the original ground-floor rooms and step into the enclosed courtyard. The garden plot outside still grows the vegetables and flowers once sold in Bamberg’s markets. Photographs and labels explain each space, while a small room upstairs holds changing displays on gardening traditions.
