Schloss Bietschied

Schloss Bietschied stands in the quiet countryside near Heusweiler in Saarland. It began as a farm built in 1743 by Conrad Wahlster, later replaced by a grander classical manor in 1810 for his grandson Heinrich Wahlster. Wahlster’s daughter Heliane added landscaped gardens around the house. The building passed through several owners, including the Prussian mining authority and French occupiers, before becoming a rehabilitation centre for injured miners in 1952. The manor’s classical style shows in its eleven-window façade of plastered stone with a slate roof. Inside, rich stucco work by Joseph Beunat frames ceilings and doorways, while carved wooden staircases remain intact. Two side wings were added in the 1930s, shifting the main entrance from the centre. The house served briefly as a military command post during the First World War and again in 1940. Visitors find a calm, symmetrical building set among mature trees. The stucco decorations survive behind modern fittings, and the old staircase still rises through the heart of the house. The surrounding park, once Heliane’s garden, now shelters the clinic’s grounds. The classical proportions and restrained elegance speak of its origins as a merchant’s home turned medical retreat.
