Shatter Cave

Shatter Cave lies deep inside Fairy Cave Quarry, a working limestone site near the village of Stoke St Michael on the gentle slopes of the Mendip Hills in Somerset. The cave belongs to the St Dunstan’s Well Catchment Site of Special Scientific Interest, where rare plants grow above ground while fragile cave formations lie below. Its name comes from blasting in the quarry that once cracked some of the purest white and translucent calcite decorations inside. The cave sits among other decorated chambers, each named for its shape or features. Experts call Shatter Cave one of Britain’s finest decorated caves because of the sheer abundance of calcite. The Diesel Chamber shows delicate gours along the floor, while Helicite Rift holds twisting heligmites and a hanging stalactite curtain. In Pillar Chamber a ten-foot white pillar rises beside one of the country’s best crystalline gour floors. Tor Chamber, Portcullis Grottoes and Pisa Passage add further clusters of sparkling formations. Visitors follow guided routes through these chambers, seeing walls lined with pure white flowstone and floors patterned by frozen calcite pools. The air stays cool and still, keeping the formations bright and untouched. Above ground the quarry tracks lead past sheer limestone faces where stone has been cut for decades. The contrast between the rough quarry and the delicate cave interior makes the visit memorable.
