University College

University College stands on Palace Green in Durham, its oldest constituent college. Founded in 1832 by Bishop William van Mildert, it occupies Durham Castle, once the bishop’s palace. The college moved into the castle in 1837 after renovations by Bishop Edward Maltby. Nearly 150 students live within the castle walls, while others stay in nearby buildings from the 18th to 19th centuries. The college has grown from a small, all-male institution to one with 700 undergraduates today. It became fully mixed in 1987 after admitting women for the first time. The college’s traditions reflect its Oxbridge-inspired origins. Fortnightly formals are held in the Great Hall, where students wear gowns and recite a Latin grace before dinner. Senior members of the Junior and Middle Common Rooms must bow to the high table before students may stand. The college also hosts the June Ball, a white-tie event marking the end of exams. Political theorist David Held served as Master from 2012 to 2019, followed by Wendy Powers as Principal in 2020. Visitors find a castle transformed into a living college, its Norman keep restored for student use. The Great Hall and chapel remain central to college life, while newer courts like Bailey Court and Moatside Court extend the accommodation. The college arms, granted in 1912, feature symbols tied to Durham’s history, including St Cuthbert’s cross. The motto *Non nobis solum*—“Not for ourselves alone”—guides its community. The castle’s position on the River Wear offers views across the peninsula, blending academic tradition with historic surroundings.
